Exotic Trees

Exotic Trees FOR SALE

In a general sense, exotic trees are simply those native to another location or country. But in gardening, trees designated as being “exotic” often refer to those which are unusual, strange, curious and even grotesque or bizarre because of their odd appearance. Trees described with any of these terms clearly stand out in a garden, contribute to it an individual character and provoke dialogue. In terms of their origins, exotic trees most commonly come from subtropical and tropical areas; this fact is understandable because the diversity of world tree species decreases moving from the equator to the polar regions. Exotic trees include those with unusual growth forms, in particular with respect to their trunk, crown/leaves, flowers and fruits. Examples of trees with unusual trunks include the legendary baobab of Africa (Adansonia digitata) which can develop a bottle-shaped trunk up to 35 feet in diameter and has only sparse branches; the Bottle Palm (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis) with its swollen lower trunk and large feather-shaped leaves and the Cuipo Tree (Cavanillesia platanifolia) which can develop buttress roots at the trunk base. Uncommon crown shapes can enhance a garden, such as the flat-topped crown and attractive patchy bark of the Leopard Tree (Caesalpinia ferrea); the Indian Mast Tree (Polyalthia longifolia) with its tall columnar crown of drooping branches and long narrow leaves and the highly-conspicuous Travelers Tree (Ravenala madagascariensis ) bearing a fan-shaped crown of banana-like leaves. Exotic trees in terms of flowers include the showy cylindrical flowers of the Erect Bottlebrush (Callistemon rigidus); the Floss Silk Tree (Chorisia speciosa) with its large, pink funnel-shaped flowers up to 6 inches in diameter and the showy red bracts and yellow flowers of the small tree or shrub, Jamaican Poinsettia (Euphorbia punicea). Exotic trees that bear flowers and fruits on the trunk and large branches include the Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) which bears fruits up to 3 feet long and weight up to 80 pounds and the Calabash Tree (Crescentia cujete) which has rounded fruits up to 6 inches in diameter which have a smooth hard shell which when dry can be cut in two and used as a bowl. Fruits of the Sausage Tree (Kigelia pinnata) are eye-catching as they are up to 3 feet in length, weigh as much as 20 pounds and are suspended on a stem several feet long. Selection of a particular exotic tree to enhance a garden should be done carefully taking into account compatibility with other garden plants. Treeworld has a wide choice of exotic trees, including those mentioned above, from which to select the best plants for landscaping any residential, commercial or public location.
