Embrace Your Lawns With Finest Varieties of South Florida Palm Trees

It is difficult to imagine a subtropical or tropical garden without several palm trees. Palms are emblematic of the tropics and are widely grown well beyond their optimal climatic conditions, to give a tropical landscape appearance. There are more than 2,000 species of palms in the world, highly concentrated in the tropical realm where species diversity is greatest. Many palm species have very limited natural distribution, sometimes confined to a single island group. The Cabada Palm (Dypsis cabadae), for example, is found wild only in the Comoro Islands of the Indian Ocean. Palms come in small to large sizes and have single or multiple trunks, both varying with species. Because each palm trunk has only a single growing point, any damage to it by physical trauma, pest attack or disease can result in growth deformity or death of the trunk, which makes solitary palms particularly vulnerable. Certain palms like the Silver Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens), native to the SE USA, have multiple underground stems, which spread out and form dense low thickets. Palms are evergreen and exhibit two general leaf types: pinnate and palmate. In landscaping, the delicate feathery appearance of pinnate-leaved palms is especially attractive and casts light to moderate shade, such as with the Buccaneer Palm (Pseudophoenix sargentii). Palms with palmate leaves (e.g. Florida Thatch Palm, Thrinax radiata) give a different visual patterning in a garden. In landscaping with palms, close attention must be given to their climatic requirements for optimal growth. Also, palms native to the forest understory typically cannot tolerate direct sun and hence must be grown in partial or full shade; examples are the Cat Palm (Chamaedorea cataractarum) and the Lady Palm (Rhapis excelsa). Certain large solitary palms lend themselves to being planted alone on a grassy area, away from other palms, to best display their beauty. The Bismark Palm (Bismarkia nobilis) is a good example, with its stout trunk, huge silvery blue green costapalmate leaves making it a strikingly beautiful plant. Another is the unusual Triangle Palm (Dypsis decaryi) which has its large, pinnate, bluish-green leaves arranged in three rows which gives to the trunk a triangular shape.

Treeworld has a wide choice of palm trees, including those mentioned above, from which to select the best plants for landscaping any residential, commercial or public location.
