Bauhinia x Blakeana – Natural Hong Kong Orchid Tree Hybrid

The Bauhinia x blakeana, commonly known as the Hong Kong orchid tree, is quite fascinating and unique. This tree is a natural hybrid, and its story involves elements of chance, discovery, and botanical intrigue. Believed to be a hybrid of two different Bauhinia species – Bauhinia purpurea and Bauhinia variegata. The ‘x’ in its name signifies its status as a hybrid.

The Bauhinia tree was first discovered in Hong Kong in around 1880. It’s specific origin is a bit of a mystery, but it’s thought to have occurred naturally in the region and although the exact location of its first discovery is not precisely documented, it is certainly within the territory of Hong Kong. The Bauhinia x blakeana tree is actually named after Sir Henry Blake, a British colonial administrator and botanist and Governor of Hong Kong from 1898 to 1903.

Bauhinia x Blakeana Tree Description

The Bauhinia x blakeana hybrid grows up to 30 feet in height and has a spread of 25 feet, featuring a dense, round crown that is somewhat irregular in shape. The tree has smooth gray bark with brittle branches, and the leaves of the Hong Kong orchid tree are of the Bauhinia genus—beautiful, simple, “butterfly-like,” and bilobate in shape. Additionally, the alternate leaves measure about 3 to 4 inches wide and 4 to 5 inches long; the glossy, light green leaves are borne on the branch’s ends.

Finally, the flowers are known to be large, showy, and of a vibrant magenta color that stand out vividly against the green foliage. Forming a graceful funnel shape, resembling an orchid, the flower has a bilaterally symmetrical shape. Each flower is typically about 4–6 inches in diameter. Hong Kong orchid tree flowers usually have five petals, with one petal often being slightly different in color or markings, providing a distinct visual appeal. While visually stunning, the flowers are generally not noted for having a strong fragrance, which is a bit unusual for orchid-like flowers. The Bauhinia x blakeana tree blooms profusely, with the flowering season extending from November to March. Providing a long-lasting display of color during this time, it makes the Hong Kong orchid tree in Florida a great choice during the colder months while attracting hummingbirds.

Best Landscape Application for Bauhinia x Blakeana

With its showy, orchid-like flowers and unique leaf shape, the Hong Kong orchid tree in Florida can be a stunning ornamental addition to the landscape, serving as a striking focal point. Additionally, if you are planning a year-round flowering garden, this tree is an ideal choice, guaranteeing a burst of color during the colder season. The tree, growing to a medium height with a spreading canopy, is also well-suited for providing shade in gardens and parks.

In residential areas, it can be planted as a standalone specimen or in groups, creating a visually stunning effect. Its adaptability to various soil types is beneficial for diverse home garden conditions. The Bauhinia x blakeana tree tolerates a range of soil types, but prefers well-draining soil. Once established, the Hong Kong orchid tree exhibits a good degree of drought tolerance. While it can be planted near coastal environments, it is not ideal for direct seaside locations due to its moderate salt spray tolerance.

Moreover, the Hong Kong orchid tree is popular for street and median plantings. Its moderate size and relatively non-invasive root system make it suitable for planting along streets and in medians, adding aesthetic value without disrupting infrastructure.
