Dypsis Madagascariensis

The Dypsis Madagascariensis ‘Mahajanga’ palm species has no common name, it is one of the more than 150 species of Dypsis, all native to Indian Ocean islands. It is a solitary or has up to 4 clustering trunks, up to 20 feet in height with a green crown shaft and smooth gray to light green trunk, 3-7 inches in diameter: considering a medium sized. The crown is open with 7 to 12 arching green pinnate leaves, each up to 9 feet long. Inflorescences emerge from the leaves bearing yellow-green flowers of both sexes on the same plant.

Mature fruit is ovoid, purple in color up to 1/2 inch long with a single seed. Propagated by seed. Birds feed on the fruits. In cultivation, the palm tolerates dry conditions but does best on deep rich soils with plenty of water. You can either find this outstanding palm solitary or in clusters, exhibiting its plumose leaves. A tropical beauty, this palm is perfect as it dearly appreciates a sunny weather; although its also ideal if the only partial shade for understory plantings. Becoming appropriate in landscaping as a specimen palm, it is ideal if only partial shade is desired for understory plantings. Dypsis Madagascariensis ‘Mahajanga’  its also suitable for indoors.
