Description
Cassia Bakeriana, also known as pink cassia for its stunning pink flowers, is native to Southeast Asia, specifically Thailand and Myanmar (formerly known as Burma). The widely recognized pink cassia tree grows well in tropical and subtropical regions, and its beauty has led to the establishment of new regions, such as South Florida, thriving in this tropical environment. Characterized by warm temperatures and a distinct wet and dry season, which is quite similar to the climate of Southeast Asia. But beyond climate compatibility, the Cassia Bakeriana tree also enjoys warm weather, and abundant full sun, and performs great in South Florida’s soil conditions, which can range from sandy to loamy, suiting the tree perfectly, especially with good drainage.
Cassia Bakeriana Tree Description
Cassia Bakeriana is a small tree or shrub that reaches an approximate height of about 30 feet. It has an open, spreading crown of delicate, feathery leaves and strong, arching branches. The tree features smooth, gray bark, and all young parts are densely pubescent. Its leaves are bluish-green, velvety, pinnate, alternate, and 1 foot or more in length. The leaves have 5 to 7 pairs of rounded, oblong leaflets, each 1 to 2 inches long. The tree is semi-evergreen, which means leaves eventually drop in winter, prior to the new growth that usually starts during late winter to early spring.
The pink cassia tree is known for its showy display of fragrant pink-purple flowers with yellow stamens. These large and showy blooms have a 2-inch stem and 3 long, extended stamens. Pink cassia blooms in early spring (March-April) in 4-10” long drooping racemes. In some climates, blooming may start during late spring. The tree’s flowering usually occurs when the tree is bare of leaves.
Plus, flowers are also wildlife magnets attracting various pollinators such as butterflies and bees! Following the flowers, the tree produces large, bean-like seed pods, which can grow up to 16 inches long, containing around 30–40 seeds.
Pink Cassia Tree Landscape Applications
With its stunning pink flowers, the tree offers a range of landscape applications; for example, its striking appearance makes it an excellent accent tree or focal point in gardens, parks, or in front of buildings, drawing attention with its blooms. In urban landscaping, the Cassia Bakeriana tree can be used for street lining or avenue planting, as its uniform growth and beautiful canopy are great for creating visually appealing streetscapes. Obviously, public parks and large gardens benefit from the colors of the pink cassia tree, while residential areas are popular in entrances, front gardens, and backyards. Plus, its seasonal blooming adds a dynamic element to landscapes, with the burst of color being a highlight during the blooming season.
Moreover, its rapid growth rate and the fact that it requires minimal maintenance once established, makes the pink cassia a wonderful option in landscape design. While no tree is entirely immune to pests and diseases, the Cassia bakeriana tree generally shows a good level of resistance, which is crucial for its survival and adaptability in a non-native environment like South Florida.
Finally, it has great symbolism; its vibrant pink flowers are not only visually captivating but also symbolize joy, hope, and renewal, all qualities that make the tree a natural choice for being a symbol of a ‘wishing tree.’
