Description

Cassia Roxburghii (Red Laburnum) is another of the popular cassia “shower” trees. This species is of moderate size, reaching up to 30 feet (9.14 meters) in height. Additionally, it has a graceful, spreading irregular crown with drooping branches. The crown of the Cassia is wide and provides ample shade. Additionally, the green leaves are fine-textured, pinnate, and compound. The leaves are about 1 foot long with pairs of opposite, oblong leaflets (see image gallery of leaves). The leaflets are about 2 inches (5.08 cm) in length. Furthermore, it is briefly deciduous and twigs are covered with dense, soft hairs.

Axillary and terminal flowers grow in clusters of pinkish red to orange blooms. The flowers are similar to those of the Cassia Bakeriana and the Cassia X  nealiae. Als, the flower petals measure  .5 inches long and have prominent extended yellow stamens. Also, fruits are the typical legume pods, cylindrical, 8 to 12 inches (30.48 cm) long and 1 inch (2.54 cm) in diameter. The pods coontain numerous seeds, used for propagation. In cultivation, Cassia Roxburghii (Red Laburnum) prefers well-drained soils. To reduce pod growth and litter, prune the cassia. Pruning will also improve its shape. Its attractive foliage and showy flowers make it an excellent choice for general landscaping. Use the Cassia in gardens, parks, and along streets.
