Cordia Sebestena

Orange geiger tree description

This Cordia Sebestena (Orange Geiger) is another color variation of the geiger’s. It is an evergreen/deciduous tropical tree. For the geiger trees, leaf drop may occur during periods of cold weather.

Subsequently, orange geiger is a moderate-size tree growing to a height of 15-20 feet, it has gray furrowed bark and develops a dense round crown. Additionally, the dull green leaves are alternate, oval, and thick with a rough upper surface, the edges often serrated and measuring 9 x 4 1/2 inches. Also, clusters of showy light to dark orange funnel-form flowers are borne at the branch ends. Fruits are small and oval, about 1 1/2 inches long, contain 1-4 seeds, and white when ripe. They are edible and attract birds.

Cordia Sebestena tree cultivation

Cordia Sebestena tree propagates from seeds or cuttings. The tree grows best on alkaline soils and can easily be transplanted and responds well to pruning practices. The geiger beetle is a particular pest to this species, and can cause leaf loss; spraying can control the pest.

Orange geiger is an attractive tree for streetscapes, along the seaside because of its high salt tolerance, and as it is pretty colorful it is an ideal specimen plant in gardens or the ground or containers.
