The Mangosteen tree is native to South Asia. It is a moderately large evergreen tree that reaches 30 to 40 feet in height. Although, it is typically shorter because of its relatively slow growth rate. Moreover, it has a dense crown of entire, simple, opposite, upward pointing, evergreen leaves. The crown is elliptical to oblong in shape and bronze color when young. The crown turns a glossy dark green as it matures.
Furthermore, the female flowers are borne on long stems. Meanwhile, its male counterpart, flowers bloom on short stems. The flowers are three eighths to half and inch across. Its flowers can be white to greenish in color. Additionally, the fruits are 1.5 inches long, approximately walnut-sized. The fruit is deep green ripening to orange-yellow, and contain 1 to 3 seeds. Importantly, the fruits are inedible, giving off an unpleasant odor. However, birds, especially parrots, are attracted to them. Bark and fruits have reputed medicinal properties.
Garcinia Spicata tree is propagated by seed. This is an interesting ornamental tree because of its glossy foliage and colorful fruits. It is an excellent choice for salt-spray prone areas, as an accent or specimen tree.
