Description

Fernandoa magnifica (Snake Tree) is small to large with a single or often multiple trunks. Its gray to pale brown bark is rough and has fissures with pale conical spines. Additionally, the leaves are opposite, dark green, shiny, pinnate with 4 to 7 pairs of leaflets and a terminal leaflet, and up to 10 inches long. Flowers are borne in bunches on short stalks when the tree has dropped it leaves; these are spectacular, bell-shaped, up to 4 inches in diameter, bright orange-red to pink with a yellow center. The showy blooms give the plant its species name.

Furthermore, the fruits are long slender pale brown capsules, flattened, spirally twisted (snake-like) and 1 to 2 feet long. The roots reportedly have medicinal use; the wood is used to make tools and as fuel. Propagated by seed, this tree prefers sandy well-drained soils. It is an endangered species in its native area of Africa because of its habitat loss. Description

El Snake Tree (Árbol Serpiente) es un pequeño  a gran árbol, el cual puede tener uno o lmúltiples troncos; su corteza es de color gris a marrón pálido, con algunas espinas cónicas y de textura fisurada. Las hojas son opuestas , de color verde oscuro , brillantes , pinnadas con 4-7 pares de prospectos y una hojuela terminal  que miden hasta 10 pulgadas de largo. Sus flores nacen en racimos sobre tallos cortos cuando a el árbol se le han caído las hojas; éstas son espectaculares, en forma de campana miden hasta 4 pulgadas de diámetro y son de color naranja brillante a rosado con un centro amarillo. Estas se caracterizan por se vistosas y proporcionan a la planta el nombre de la especie. Los frutos son capsulas largas y delgadas de color marrón pálido, aplanadas y torcidas a manera de espiral (como una serpiente) los cuales miden entre 1 y 2 pies. Acorde a los informes las raíces tienen uso medicinal y la madera se utiliza para la hacer herramientas y como combustible. Se propaga por semilla, este árbol prefiere suelos arenosos bien drenados. Esta es una especie en peligro en su área nativa de África debido su pérdida de hábitat. El Snake Tree (Árbol Serpiente) es un espécimen muy inusual y exótico lo cual lo convierte en un árbol muy atractivo para parques y jardines.
