Tipuana Tipu Tree Description
Tipuana tipu is a medium to large evergreen tree. Tipuana has a dense flat crown. Also, it sometimes grows wider than tall. Additionally, it has a gray fissured bark. The leaves are opposite, compound pinnate, and about 10 inches long. Furthermore, its leaves are divided into numerous rounded leaflets. The leaflets measure about 1 to 3 inches long.
Moreover, the flowers are borne in elongated clusters 2 to 4 inches long. The flowers are borne at upper leaf forks and branch tips. The golden yellow blooms, are pear-shaped, abundant and carpet the ground beneath the tree. Importantly, the flowers attract bees. Furthermore, the fruits are winged samaras, unique among the legume trees.

The fruit resemble the fruit on maple tree, containing a single seed, used for propagation. The Tipuana tipu tree yields good reddish timber and the foliage is fed to cattle. Tipuana is hardy, tolerant of a wide range of soil types, if well-drained, and is frost tolerant. Due to its potential large size and spreading root system it is best planted away from structures. The attractive foliage and flowers, and fast growth rate, make Tipuana Tipu a popular garden and park shade tree, street tree, as a windbreak and in large containers.
