Crotons

Crotons, or Codiaeum variegatum, are popular tropical shrubs used in landscaping across Florida and other warm climates. In cultivation, they grow about 5 feet tall and are popular for their vibrant, variegated leaves. Native to Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Western Pacific, crotons stand out for their ornamental value.

And, although there are 16 other Codiaeum species, none offer the color range of C. variegatum. These crotons are easy to identify with their thick evergreen leaves, yellow star-shaped flowers, and milky sap. Their bright leaf patterns make them ideal for gardens, hedges, and container designs.

Croton variegation includes bold colors, unique patterns, and many leaf shapes. Leaves may be linear, oval, lobed, or spiraled. Variegation occurs when pigments mask the green color, creating the signature mix of reds, yellows, oranges, and greens. Tip cuttings preserve these traits, while seeds are used to develop new croton varieties.

Plus, Crotons have been widely used in Mediterranean and tropical landscapes since the 19th century. As, they perform well in full sun, warm climates, and well-drained soil.
