Description
Cassia Bakeriana, also known as the Pink Cassia tree or Pink Shower Tree, is native to Southeast Asia, specifically Thailand and Myanmar. It grows exceptionally well in tropical and subtropical regions, and South Florida’s warm temperatures, full sun, and well-drained soils — from sandy to loamy — make it one of the most successful flowering tree introductions to the region in recent decades. Learn more about why it has become a South Florida favorite.
Cassia Bakeriana Tree Description
Cassia Bakeriana is a small to medium-sized tree reaching approximately 30 feet in height, with an open, spreading crown of delicate feathery leaves and strong arching branches. The smooth gray bark and densely pubescent young parts give it a distinctive texture. Leaves are bluish-green, velvety, pinnate, and alternate, over 1 foot in length, with 5 to 7 pairs of rounded oblong leaflets each 1 to 2 inches long. The tree is semi-deciduous — leaves drop in winter just before new growth begins in late winter to early spring.
The Pink Cassia tree is best known for its spectacular display of fragrant pink-purple flowers with yellow stamens, blooming in early spring (March–April) in 4–10 inch drooping racemes — typically when the tree is bare of leaves, making the flowering display even more dramatic. In some climates blooming may begin in late spring. Following the flowers, the tree produces large bean-like seed pods up to 16 inches long containing 30–40 seeds. Flowers attract butterflies, bees, and other pollinators — a highlight of any South Florida spring flowering landscape.
Pink Shower Tree – Landscape Applications
With its spectacular spring bloom, the Pink Shower Tree offers a wide range of landscape applications. Its striking appearance makes it an excellent accent tree or focal point in gardens, parks, and building entrances. In urban settings, the Cassia Bakeriana tree works beautifully for street lining and avenue planting, thanks to its uniform growth and graceful wide canopy. It also performs well in residential front gardens, backyards, and driveways, where its seasonal burst of color becomes a yearly highlight.
Once established, the tree requires minimal maintenance and shows good resistance to pests and diseases — a reliable performer in South Florida’s climate. Its symbolic value adds another dimension: the vibrant pink flowers are widely associated with joy, hope, and renewal, earning it the nickname “wishing tree” in parts of Asia.
