Description

Cassia Javanica – Apple Blossom Tree for South Florida

Cassia Javanica (Apple Blossom tree) is a semi-deciduous flowering tree native to the Indonesian island of Java, from which it takes its species name. It belongs to the same Cassia family as the Golden Shower and Pink Cassia, and together they form one of South Florida’s most celebrated spring-flowering trios.

Apple Blossom Tree – Description

Cassia Javanica is a small to moderate-sized tree, typically reaching 25 feet, though it can grow taller. It has a broad, flat-topped, moderately dense crown with slightly drooping, somewhat brittle branches. The tannin-rich bark is gray and smooth, marked by former branch scars. Leaves are pinnate, alternate, up to 27 inches long, with pairs of opposite glossy elliptical to oblong leaflets measuring 1–2 by ¾–1 inches. The tree is briefly deciduous around the time of flowering.

The Apple Blossom flowers are borne in clusters up to 7 inches long, with numerous aromatic blooms in soft shades of pale pink and white — closely resembling apple blossoms, which gives the tree its common name. Butterflies and other insects are the primary pollinators. Fruits are hard, woody pods up to 2 feet long and about 1 inch in diameter, containing multiple brown bean-like seeds used for propagation. The pods also have a history of use in traditional medicine. The lumber is valued for general construction and furniture.

Cassia Javanica – Landscape Use & Cultivation

In cultivation, Cassia Javanica grows best in well-drained, deep soils of various types. Regular pruning is recommended to maintain an attractive shape and control excessive branching. In landscaping, the Apple Blossom tree is an ideal choice for gardens, parks, roadsides, and as a shade or specimen tree — as well as in large containers. Pods and leaves generate moderate litter, which should be considered when placing near walkways.

Its bloom cycle typically runs from May to June, just after Cassia Bakeriana, creating an extended season of color when both species are planted together. Read more about how to use Cassia Javanica in a dual-tone blooming landscape design.

Cassia Javanica is also one of the parent species of the Rainbow Shower Tree (Cassia x Nealiae) — a natural hybrid celebrated as the official tree of Honolulu.
